When many homeowners picture their dream pool, they envisage a safe and stylish haven that can be enjoyed year round while also reducing energy consumption. What many won’t realise, Georgia Doyle discovers, is that a pool enclosure will help fulfil all these needs and more.

Building a pool is an excellent way to improve your quality of life while also adding to the value of your property. If you want to protect your investment, a pool enclosure might be just the thing for you.

An alternative to pool covers, pool enclosures offer a myriad of benefits that extend beyond covering your pool. James Hutchins, managing director at

The Pool Enclosure Company, explains how a pool enclosure can make the world of difference to your home swimming pool.

According to Hutchins, pool enclosures are ideal for homeowners who want to use their pool 365 days a year, while reducing maintenance and energy costs. They also increase a pool’s safety by ensuring it is locked and secure.

Pool enclosures are solid structures that are built over a pool. Constructed using materials that are suited to being near water, such as polycarbonate, rubber, stainless steel and aluminium, pool enclosures enclose the pool protecting it from the elements.

Available in an array of shapes, sizes and colours, homeowners can install a pool enclosure that is low, or something much larger that resembles an indoor pool.

One of the wonderful things about pool enclosures is their ability to fold away in the blink of an eye, instantly creating an open-air pool. With the ability to fully-retract, when the weather is warm you can enjoy the sunshine and when the weather is cool you can enjoy a swim under the enclosure. Pool enclosures can also come with lateral sliding, hinged and double sliding doors to allow greater air-flow.

Pool enclosures come in varying sizes to suit different needs, so when choosing your pool enclosure it’s a good idea to consider what you want out of it. Will yours be a low or medium enclosure? Low to medium enclosures can accommodate swimmers when enclosed, however there is little room to walk around the pool if it isn’t retracted. This design is good for homeowners looking to reduce ongoing maintenance costs while enjoying their pool year-round.

If you want the benefits of a pool enclosure, but only have a small space available, this is the enclosure for you. Small/medium enclosures are popular for their low profile and are ideal for smaller-sized properties and homeowners wanting to maintain views of their pool and property. If you’re more interested in adding an extra room to the property then a high enclosure might be better suited to your needs. High enclosures allow you to walk comfortably inside. As many have enough room to accommodate tables and chairs, a high pool enclosure can provide your home with an additional poolside entertainment area. Another important consideration to make is whether a pool enclosure will suit the shape of your pool. A simple rectangular shape is ideal for both low/medium and high enclosures, however any shape can be accommodated as Hutchins explains.

“We (The Pool Enclosure Company) can work with standard rectangular, kidney shaped and infinity-edge pools,” says Hutchins. WHY choose a pool enclosure? Offering benefits to your pool’s safety, efficiency and easy installation there are plenty of reasons why you should install a pool enclosure.

If safety is a particular concern for you, pool enclosures are an excellent choice. While all the appropriate safety fencing must be used in conjunction with a pool enclosure, they offer a final safety barrier for added peace of mind. “[A pool enclosure] makes a pool much safer than a fence as [The Pool Enclosure Company] provides controlled key-entry with the most advanced locking system globally. A pool enclosure will maximise safety,” says Hutchins.

A pool enclosure will protect your pool from lint and debris that may land in your pool. By reducing the amount of waste that gathers in your pool, the supporting mechanics won’t have to work as hard, lowering the amount of energy that is used to run your pool. Having a pool in an enclosed space also reduces the need for heat pumps. Heat is trapped in the pool, so you’ll use less energy heating it. Additionally, the polycarbonate encasing heats your pool via natural sunlight, reducing the need to heat your pool further.

Installing a pool enclosure is a relatively easy endeavour, especially as residential systems don’t require additional power support systems. “No systems are required to support the enclosure as all materials are designed to be around a wet environment,” says Hutchins. If you require additional air-flow, pool enclosures can be easily modified to suit your needs. Ventilating windows and opening segments can be incorporated creating air-flow while in use. If you plan on building a larger-sized enclosure, you may need to consider a dehumidifier. “On larger enclosures, [The Pool Enclosure Company] can offer the option of building a dehumidifier into one of the enclosure faces,” says Hutchins. By installing a ventilation system, your pool enclosure will be comfortable to use year-round, whether it’s hot or cold.

If you don’t have a pool and are simply looking to improve your outdoor area by creating a sunny and protected space you can lounge in, why not build an enclosure as a sunroom or outdoor terrace. This is a great idea for homeowners looking to make the most of their outdoor area. Regardless of your needs, a pool enclosure is a versatile product that promises to improve any space it’s installed in. Whether you choose a small and retractable design or a large model, your new pool enclosure will ensure you make the most of your pool 365 days a year.
